Summer Sizzle: Staying Hydrated, Sun-Safe, and Active All Season Long!

Image of watermelon slices

Hey fabulous friends,

Summer is finally here! Time to bust out the swimsuits, fire up the grill, and soak up some sunshine. But with the soaring temperatures and longer days, it's also important to prioritize our health and well-being. Here's how to stay hydrated, sun-safe, and keep our bodies moving this summer, all while embracing the fun of the season!

Hydration Hero:

Water is our best friend in the summer heat. Dehydration can zap our energy, lead to headaches, and even worsen our mood. So, here's how to be a hydration hero:

  • Drink Up Before You Feel Thirsty: Don't wait until you're parched to reach for your water bottle. Aim to sip on water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.

  • Carry a Reusable Water Bottle: Keep a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go. This makes it easy to stay hydrated throughout the day and is better for the environment than disposable plastic bottles.

    • There are SO many options out there so find the one that works best for you. Do you need motivation? Check out this water bottle…https://amzn.to/3Rj7NcK

  • Spice Up Your Water: Add a squeeze of lemon, cucumber slices, or berries to your water for a refreshing twist.

    • If you love infusing your water with fruits, make sure you have a bottle that makes it easier for you. My favorite is the BruMate MultiShaker….https://amzn.to/3RHXTSn

  • Hydrating Fruits and Veggies: Don't forget that fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber, and celery are also packed with water. Snack on these throughout the day for an extra hydration boost.

Sun Safety Savvy:

The sun's rays can be damaging, so it's important to be sun-safe all summer long:

  • Sunscreen is a Must: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every single day, even on cloudy days. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you're sweating or swimming.

  • Seek Shade: The sun is strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Plan your outdoor activities for early morning or later afternoon, and seek shade whenever possible.

  • Sun-Protective Clothing: Wear lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats to shield your skin from the sun's rays.

  • Sunglasses are Essential: Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays with sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays.

Staying Active and Ageless:

As we get older, staying active is more important than ever. Here's how to keep your body moving and feeling great this summer:

  • Find Activities You Love: The key to staying active is to choose activities you enjoy. Whether it's swimming, biking, dancing, or taking a brisk walk, find something that gets you moving and keeps you motivated.

    • Cough, cough…Dancing is my primary activity. Find a local SHiNE Dance FitnessTM Instructor near you!

  • Beat the Heat: Exercise in the cooler morning or evening hours to avoid the heat of the midday sun.

  • Stay Hydrated During Workouts: Don't forget to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout to stay hydrated and prevent overheating.

  • Listen to Your Body: Start slowly and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts as your fitness level improves. Don't push yourself too hard, especially in the summer heat.

    • Find a fan!

Embrace a Summer of Fun and Fitness!

By staying hydrated, sun-safe, and active, you can make the most of your summer without compromising your health. So grab your water bottle, sunscreen, and favorite workout gear, and get ready for a fantastic summer season!

What are your favorite tips for staying healthy and active during the summer?

P.S. Remember, consulting with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine is always a good idea, especially as we get older. Remember, clicking on links may contribute to commissions I earn.

Defying Time: Building a Powerful Skincare Routine for Ageless Beauty

Image of a woman’s face with moisturized skin. Her hair is pulled back to reveal the entire facial features.

Hey fabulous friends!

Mother Nature is a wonder, but let's be honest, she can be a bit rough on our skin as we age. Fine lines, wrinkles, and a loss of elasticity might start to show, but don't despair! With the right arsenal of anti-aging ingredients and a consistent skincare routine, you can embrace your beautiful, mature skin and keep it glowing for years to come.

Growing up, my mother told us girls not to ignore our neck and upper chest. That we should treat it with our faces each day. Being the smart youth that I was, I, of course, did not listen. I also remember going to bed some nights without washing the makeup off my face. Ugh, the ‘me’ now is not happy with the ‘me’ from then! Although I can’t go back and slap my younger self in the face, I can do things now to help reverse that damage.

The All-Star Lineup:

A powerful skincare routine for aging skin focuses on five key elements: cleansing, moisturizing, sun protection, incorporating anti-aging ingredients, and addressing specific concerns. Here's a breakdown of these essential steps:

  • Cleanse: Gently remove dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping your skin's natural moisture barrier. Opt for a creamy cleanser that won't leave your skin feeling tight or dry.

  • Moisturize: Hydration is key for plump, youthful-looking skin. Look for a moisturizer formulated for mature skin that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides. Hyaluronic acid hydrates like a dream, while ceramides help strengthen your skin's barrier and peptides stimulate collagen production for a firmer, more youthful appearance.

  • Sun Protection: Sun damage is one of the leading causes of premature aging. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen every single day, even on cloudy days.

  • Embrace Anti-Aging Powerhouses: This is where the magic happens! Introduce serums or treatments with ingredients that target the signs of aging:

    • Retinol: A superstar ingredient proven to reduce wrinkles, fade age spots, and boost collagen production for a smoother, more even complexion.

    • Hyaluronic Acid: As mentioned earlier, this magic ingredient plumps and hydrates the skin, giving it a youthful glow.

    • Vitamin C: Brightens the skin and fights free radical damage, which can contribute to wrinkles and loss of firmness.

      • Remember to always apply sunscreen or a moisturizer with SPF after using Vitamin C. Your skin is much more vulnerable with vitamin C applied.

  • Target Your Concerns: In addition to this all-star lineup, you can incorporate additional products to address specific concerns like hyperpigmentation, deeper wrinkles, or loss of firmness. Look for eye creams formulated to tackle puffiness and dark circles, or night creams that offer extra nourishment and repair.

Building Your Regimen:

Now that you know the essential elements, here's how to create a powerful routine:

  • Morning: Cleanse, apply a serum with antioxidants like vitamin C, and moisturize with SPF.

  • Night: Cleanse, apply a retinol serum or other targeted treatment, and moisturize.

Remember, consistency is key! Sticking to your skincare routine will help you achieve and maintain healthy, radiant skin that looks and feels years younger. Even when you are tired and just want to fall into bed…take that extra minute and do it!

Bonus Tips for Timeless Beauty:

  • Exfoliate once or twice a week: This removes dead skin cells and promotes cell turnover for a brighter, smoother complexion. Choose a gentle exfoliator suitable for mature skin.

  • Get enough sleep: When you're well-rested, it shows on your face! Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

  • Drink plenty of water: Hydration is essential for healthy skin at any age. Aim for eight glasses of water a day.

  • Manage stress: Chronic stress can wreak havoc on your skin. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature. I added a simple breathing app to my smart watch and will hit start for 1 minute when I know i need a quick calm down.

My current routine includes the below product lines:

Embrace your beautiful, mature skin and give it the powerful care it deserves. With a consistent, well-rounded skincare routine featuring effective anti-aging ingredients, you'll be defying time and glowing from within for years to come!

Brush It Off: The Importance of Cleaning Your Beauty Tools

Image of a pink blush brush being washed on a white makeup cleaning pad. The woman has chrome pink nails.

Hey beautiful friends,

No matter what age group you fall into, we all know the importance of a good skincare routine, but what about the tools we use to apply those amazing products? Our makeup brushes, sponges, and applicators are the workhorses of our beauty routines, but how often do we give them the TLC they deserve?

The Dirty Truth About Dirty Tools:

Believe it or not, dirty beauty tools can harbor bacteria, dead skin cells, and old makeup residue. This can lead to a number of problems, including:

  • Breakouts: Bacteria on dirty brushes can clog pores and lead to pesky pimples.

  • Uneven Application: Caked-on makeup on brushes can make it difficult to apply products smoothly and evenly.

  • Product Waste: Old makeup residue on brushes can absorb new product, making it less effective and leading to wasted products.

  • Tool Damage: Over time, makeup buildup can damage your brushes and shorten their lifespan.

The Cleaning Cavalry to the Rescue!

The good news is that cleaning your beauty tools is a simple and effective way to maintain healthy skin, ensure flawless application, and extend the life of your brushes. Here's how to do it:

What You'll Need:

  • Gentle cleanser (baby shampoo or a brush cleanser)

  • Warm water

  • Microfiber cloths or towels

    • If you have a Norwex hookup, find her, their makeup microfiber cloths are wonderful!!

  • Makeup Cleaning Pad

    • There are SO many options and I don’t think it matters, I use a silicon pad with various scrubbing bumps like this one: https://amzn.to/3UsaQBy

  • Optional: Distilled white vinegar (for deep cleaning)

Cleaning Your Brushes:

  1. Wet your brushes with warm water.

  2. Apply a small amount of cleanser to the bristles.

  3. Gently massage the bristles in circular motions to loosen makeup and dirt.

  4. Rinse the bristles thoroughly with warm water until the water runs clear.

  5. Reshape the bristles and lay them flat on a clean towel to dry.

    1. DO NOT stand brushes upright, as water can collect in the ferrule and damage the brush. I have seen makeup cleaning pads with slots to hold the brushes upright to dry. I can’t stress enough that you should NOT use those!

Deep Cleaning (Optional):

For a deeper clean, you can soak your brushes in a solution of warm water and a few drops of distilled white vinegar for 10-15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and dry flat as usual.

Cleaning Other Tools:

  • Beauty Sponges: Cleanse with warm water and soap or a brush cleanser. You can also microwave damp sponges for 30 seconds to kill bacteria.

  • Eyelash Curler: Gently wipe down the pads with rubbing alcohol or makeup remover.

    • If you like gross videos just look for one showing what happens when you use an eyelash curler after applying mascara! EEK! It is so important that the curler is clean and dry!

  • Makeup Applicators: These are typically disposable, but if you prefer to reuse them, clean them with rubbing alcohol or a disinfectant wipe.

Cleaning Frequency:

  • Brushes used daily: Clean every one to two weeks.

  • Brushes used less frequently: Clean every two to four weeks.

  • Beauty Sponges: Clean after each use.

  • Other Tools: Clean as needed.

By cleaning your beauty tools regularly, you'll ensure healthy, glowing skin, flawless makeup application, and happy, healthy brushes that will last for years to come!

What are your favorite tips for cleaning your beauty tools?

P.S. Remember, a clean makeup routine starts with clean tools!

Trae’s Guide to Moisturizers for Every Skin Type

Hey beautiful friends,

Moisturizer – it's a skincare essential, but with so many options available, how do you choose the right one for your skin? The key lies in understanding your unique skin type: dry, oily, or combination. Each type has specific needs, and the right moisturizer will keep your face feeling hydrated, healthy, and radiant.

Know Your Skin Type:

  • Dry Skin: Feels tight, flaky, and may even be itchy or uncomfortable. Dry skin lacks moisture and can appear dull or ashy.

  • Oily Skin: Prone to shine and may experience breakouts. Oily skin produces excess sebum, an oil that can clog pores.

  • Combination Skin: A combination of dry and oily zones. Typically, the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) is oily, while the cheeks are normal or dry.

It took a variety of moisturizers for me to determine my skin type. When I was in my 20s I had combo, but now I have realized I am in the dry skin phase of my life. So be sure you look for changes as you age, it won’t always be the same. How do you determine your skin type? The best advice I received was to wash your face with your daily soap or face scrub. Pat it dry and wait for 20-30 minutes. Don’t put anything on your face right away, just let it sit. If your skin feels tight and uncomfortable like mine did, then you have dry skin. If you immediately feel greasy or oily, you know you have oily skin. If your face is oily in some areas and dry in others, you have combination skin. Of course, you can always seek advice from your dermatologist and have them verify.

Once you know your skin type, you can choose a moisturizer formulated to address your specific needs:

Dry Skin Heroes:

  • Look for: Thick, creamy formulas with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and shea butter. These ingredients attract and retain moisture, leaving your skin feeling plump and hydrated.

  • Avoid: Products labeled "oil-free" or "astringent," as they can further dry out your skin.

  • I have found that Urban Retreat’s product line has changed my skin and complexion dramatically!

Oily Skin Solutions:

  • Look for: Lightweight, oil-free formulas with mattifying ingredients like clay or witch hazel. These ingredients absorb excess oil and control shine without clogging pores.

  • Hyaluronic acid can also be a good option for oily skin, as it hydrates without feeling greasy.

  • Avoid: Comedogenic ingredients (ingredients that can clog pores), often labeled as "comedogenic" on the product label.

Combination Skin Champions:

  • Look for: Lotions or gel-creams that offer lightweight hydration without excess oil. Hyaluronic acid is a great choice for combination skin because it hydrates without clogging pores.

  • Consider using a different moisturizer for your T-zone and cheeks. A mattifying moisturizer can be used on the T-zone, while a more hydrating formula can be used on the cheeks.

Beyond the Basics:

Here are some additional tips for finding your perfect moisturizer:

  • Patch test new products: Apply a small amount of moisturizer to your inner arm and wait 24 hours to see if there's any irritation.

  • Layer your skincare: Apply a hydrating serum under your moisturizer for an extra boost of hydration.

  • Look for SPF: Sunscreen is essential for all skin types, so choose a moisturizer with SPF protection to shield your skin from harmful UV rays.

    • My absolute favorite UVA/UVB daily sunscreen for my face is Tula Skincare: https://amzn.to/4cYSKOI

      • This does not smell bad, doesn’t get greasy, and I have never broken out from using it.

  • Consult a dermatologist: If you have any concerns about your skin or are unsure which moisturizer is right for you, a dermatologist can offer personalized advice.

With the right moisturizer, you can achieve a healthy, hydrated complexion that glows from within. So, ditch the dry patches and greasy shine, and find your fountain of youth in a bottle!

What's your favorite moisturizer?

Finding Your Silver Lining: Self-Love and Positive Affirmations

Hey fabulous friends,

Life throws us curveballs sometimes, and recently, mine came in the form of an unexpected job loss. After 22 years with the same company, I found myself facing a wide-open world of possibilities and nerve-wracking “Now What’s”. There were moments of doubt, frustration, and maybe even a few tears.

But here's the thing: even during challenging times, the power of positive affirmations and self-love can be a transformative force. This experience has only strengthened my belief in the importance of self-care and a positive mindset.

Why Self-Love Matters More Than Ever

When faced with a setback, it's easy to fall into negative self-talk. But here's the secret: you are worthy and capable. This is where self-love comes in. By nurturing and accepting yourself, you build the resilience to bounce back from challenges and embrace new opportunities.

The Power of Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations are powerful statements that can help reprogram your thinking and cultivate a more positive outlook. Here are a few affirmations that I've been repeating to myself lately:

  • "I am strong and capable."

  • "This is just a temporary setback. New opportunities await."

  • "I am worthy of success and happiness."

  • "I am using this time to learn and grow."

  • "I trust my intuition and will make the best decision for my future."

  • “I am okay being ‘just okay’.”

Repeating these affirmations throughout the day helps me stay focused on the positive and approach this transition with a sense of empowerment.

Finding the Silver Lining

Let's be honest, there are challenges associated with a job change. But there are also unexpected positives! I'm finally getting that time in the gym I've been craving, dancing with the gals that I love. I'm reconnecting with old friends and exploring new hobbies. This experience has forced me to step outside my comfort zone and rediscover my passions. Heck, I created this beauty blog, which is something I never saw myself doing!

Remember, you are not defined by your job. This is a chance to rewrite my story, embrace new possibilities, and discover my true potential. Your current frustration may not be work-related, but just know that you are not what you do, you are YOU. You are beautiful.

Be Beautiful, Be YOU!

What are your favorite self-love practices or affirmations?

P.S. No matter what is stressing you out, be kind to yourself. Take bubble baths, read that book you've been putting off, and don't be afraid to ask for help from friends and family. You've got this!

Striking a Balance: Highlighting and Contouring for a Fabulous Forties Face

Images shows a woman with the various contour application areas for blush, bronzer, and highlighters around her face.

Hey, gorgeous gals!

Highlighter and contour – these makeup techniques can add dimension, shape, and a youthful glow to any face. But for our gorgeous, mature complexions, there are a few key things to keep in mind to achieve a natural, flattering look.

Let's Sculpt, Not Sharpen!

Gone are the days of harsh contour lines and overly dramatic highlighting. Our goal is to enhance our natural features, not drastically alter them. Here are some tips for highlighting and contouring a mature face:

  • Creamy is Dreamy: Opt for cream-based or liquid highlighters and contour products. These blend more easily than powders and won't settle into fine lines.

  • Less is More: A light touch is key! Apply each product sparingly and build up gradually for a natural effect. It is easier to add more than it is to remove. ;)

  • Placement is Paramount:

    • Highlight: Focus highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones, brow bone, and cupid's bow to add light and lift. You can also dab a touch in the inner corners of your eyes to brighten them. With my hooded eyes, I feel like it helps quite a bit.

    • Contour: Apply contour under your cheekbones, along the jawline (if desired), and down the sides of your nose to create a subtle definition.

  • Blend, Blend, Blend: Use a damp beauty blender or brush to blend your highlighter and contour seamlessly for a diffused, natural finish.

    • For the “damp” effect, I use my Clinique Moisture spray on my brush. You don’t need it to be wet!

Products for the Perfect Forty Face:

  • Cream Highlighter: A soft, radiant cream highlighter will add a beautiful glow to your mature skin.

  • Cream Contour: A blendable cream contour allows for precise application and natural-looking definition.

Highlighting and Contouring Techniques:

Here's a quick breakdown of how to apply highlighter and contour:

  1. Start with a clean, moisturized face.

  2. Apply your foundation and concealer as usual.

  3. Apply your contour shade under your cheekbones, along your jawline (if desired), and down the sides of your nose. Blend well.

  4. Apply your blush right above the contour shade on your cheekbones. Blend back toward your ear and upwards.

  5. Apply your highlighter to the tops of your cheekbones, brow bone, cupid's bow, and inner corners of your eyes. Blend well.

  6. Set your makeup with a translucent powder to keep everything in place.

Remember, you are a work of art! Highlighting and contouring are tools to enhance your natural beauty, not cover it up. Experiment with different techniques and find what flatters you most.

What are your favorite highlighting and contouring tips?

Embracing Your Natural Beauty With Confidence (and Following the Celeb Trend!)

Selfie of Trae no makeup

Hey beautiful friends,

Welcome back to the fabulous forties! Today, we're taking a break from makeup palettes and foundation brushes to celebrate something truly special: your natural beauty.

In a world obsessed with filters and makeup trends, it's easy to forget the power of embracing your bare face. But let me tell you, there's a quiet confidence and undeniable beauty that radiates from a woman who is comfortable in her own skin.

Why Go Makeup-Free?

There are countless reasons to join the growing trend of embracing your natural beauty:

  • It's Liberating: Let's face it (pun intended!), applying makeup can take time and effort. Going makeup-free allows you to simplify your routine and spend that extra time on things you enjoy.

  • It's Good for Your Skin: Makeup can clog pores and irritate sensitive skin. Taking a break allows your skin to breathe and can help improve your overall complexion.

  • It Boosts Confidence: When you learn to appreciate your natural features, it fosters a sense of self-acceptance and inner strength.

  • It's Empowering: Rejecting societal pressures to conform to unrealistic beauty standards is incredibly empowering. Owning your natural beauty shows the world your confidence and self-worth.

You're in Good Company!

The movement towards embracing natural beauty is gaining serious momentum, with celebrities leading the charge. Stars like Alicia Keys, Gabrielle Union-Wade, Kim Kardashian, and my favorite Pamela Anderson have been spotted rocking the "no-makeup makeup" look or going completely bare-faced on social media and red carpets.

How to Embrace Your Natural Beauty:

  • Focus on Skincare: A healthy skincare routine is the foundation for naturally beautiful skin. Cleanse, moisturize, and protect your skin from the sun to keep it glowing.

  • Drink Plenty of Water: Hydration is key for plump, healthy skin. Aim to drink eight glasses of water a day. It seems silly, but find a water bottle that will truly motivate you! I have one with motivational reminders printed on it: https://amzn.to/3VLHoaq

  • Get Enough Sleep: Beauty sleep is a real thing! When you're well-rested, your skin shows it. Not always an easy task!!

  • Eat a Balanced Diet: Nourish your body from the inside out with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

  • Find Your Signature Smile: A genuine smile is the most beautiful accessory you can wear. Radiate positivity and let your inner light shine through! But also know, that smiling is not for anyone but you! I have had many men tell me to smile more…um no, you don’t get my smile unless I want to share that with you!

Remember, you are beautiful, with or without makeup. It takes courage to embrace your natural self, but the rewards are endless. You'll not only feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin, but you'll also inspire others to do the same.

P.S. This post isn't about ditching makeup forever! Makeup can be a fun way to express yourself. But it's important to remember that true beauty comes from within.

Kissable Lips: The Perfect Pout for Mature Beauty

Images of women’s lips with various shades of Color Street Hi-Gloss Lip Oil applied

Hey fabulous friends!

Our lips are a central feature of our face, adding color, definition, and a whole lot of personality to our smiles. But as we enter our forties, our lips can start to lose some of their youthful plumpness and become more prone to dryness and fine lines.

Fear not, lipstick lovers! There are still plenty of ways to achieve kissable lips and a gorgeous pout, no matter your age. The key is to find the right lip product that hydrates, flatters and celebrates your beautiful smile.

Moisture Matters:

  • Hydration is essential for mature lips. Look for lip products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and jojoba oil, which will keep your lips plump and prevent dryness.

  • Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells and promote smoother lips. You can use a gentle lip scrub or even a soft toothbrush.

  • Nighttime lip treatments are a great way to give your lips some extra TLC. Apply a thick layer of balm or mask before bed to wake up to softer, smoother lips.

    • I use the Strivectin lip treatment before bed each night. It isn’t specific to night time, but I tend to lick my lips a ton and by using this at night I think I get more out of it! ;) https://amzn.to/3VNz8qt

Choosing Your Perfect Lip Product:

  • Creamy Lipsticks: These are a great option for mature lips because they are hydrating and provide buildable color. Look for lipsticks with a satin or satin-matte finish to avoid accentuating fine lines.

  • Tinted Lip Balms: Offer a sheer wash of color and a boost of moisture, perfect for everyday wear.

    • If you follow my VIP group on Facebook, you already know the Color Street Tinted Lip Balm is my lifeline!! ;)

  • Lip Glosses: These can add shine and plumpness to lips, but be mindful of overly sticky formulas.

  • Lip Liners: (Optional) A lip liner can help define your lips and prevent lipstick from bleeding. Choose a shade that matches your lipstick or is slightly darker for a fuller look.

Color Tips for Mature Lips:

  • Nudes and neutral pinks: These are universally flattering shades that will enhance your natural lip color without being too overwhelming.

  • Berry tones: Rich berry shades can add a touch of glamour and can be very flattering on mature complexions. Opt for creamier finishes to avoid accentuating dryness.

  • Bold Reds: A classic red lip is always a showstopper! Choose a blue-based red, which tends to be more flattering on mature teeth, and avoid overly matte finishes.

Shaping and Definition:

  • Lining your lips: Sharpen your lip liner and line just outside your natural lip line to create the illusion of fuller lips. Blend the liner well for a natural look.

    • For an inexpensive lip liner sharpener, I like the e.l.f. brand. This gives two sizes to sharpen. https://amzn.to/3VNwS2z

  • Play with dimension: Applying a lighter shade of lipstick or gloss to the center of your lips can make them appear fuller.

Here are some additional tips for rocking fabulous lips over 40:

  • Exfoliate before applying lipstick: This will create a smooth canvas for your lip color.

    • I use my home-made lip sugar scrub now, but I used to use Fabu-Lips products or this Handmade Hero’s set: https://amzn.to/49n9fRv

  • Apply lip liner: This will help your lipstick stay put and prevent bleeding.

  • Use a lip brush for precise application: This will give you more control over your lip color.

  • Blot your lips: This will help remove any excess product and create a more natural look.

  • Finger swip: This sounds odd, but trust me you want to do this. After applying your lip product, put your finger in your mouth, close your lips around the finger and pull it out. This will remove any product that is within the lip that may transfer to your teeth!

  • Don't forget to smile! A genuine smile is the most beautiful lip color of all.

With a little know-how and the right products, you can achieve gorgeous, kissable lips at any age. So go forth, flaunt your smile, and rock that fabulous pout!

What are your favorite lip products and tips?

Flawless in your Forties: Finding Your Perfect Foundation

Image of a woman with flawless foundation, red finger nails and black eyeliner.

Hey fabulous friends!

In our quest for a radiant, even complexion, foundation plays a starring role. But with so many options available – liquids, powders, creams, and more – how do you choose the right one for your gorgeous, mature skin?

The key is understanding your skin type and what kind of coverage and finish you desire. Here's a breakdown to help you find your perfect foundation match:

Know Your Skin Type:

  • Dry Skin: Looks flaky, feels tight, and needs extra hydration.

  • Oily Skin: Prone to shine and breakouts, needs oil-control.

  • Combination Skin: Oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and dry elsewhere.

  • Sensitive Skin: Reacts easily to harsh ingredients, needs gentle formulas.

Finding Your Foundation Formula:

  • Liquid Foundation: Offers buildable, light to full coverage, and comes in hydrating or oil-free options. Great for dry, normal, and combination skin. (e.g. Clinique Even Better™ Makeup SPF 15)

  • Cream Foundation: Provides rich moisture and full coverage, ideal for dry skin. (e.g. Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Coverage Foundation)

  • Powder Foundation: Sets makeup, absorbs oil, and offers light to medium coverage. Perfect for oily or combination skin.

  • BB & CC Creams: These multi-tasking products offer light coverage and hydration, and often contain skincare benefits. A good option for all skin types, especially those who prefer a natural look.

Personally, in my forties, I've found that a combination of liquid and cream foundations works best. For everyday wear, I love the lightweight, hydrating formula of the Clinique Even Better™ Makeup SPF 15. My personal shade is Alabaster: https://amzn.to/3UeonfX I always look for SPF 15 in any foundation or cream product I use.

On days when I need less coverage, I like to use the Urban Retreat 3D Color Corrector Cream: https://www.urban-retreat.com/me/angie-brisbin/?ref_id=NDc3NDAw This gives me a little coverage with a simple enhancement to my natural look.

Here are some additional tips for choosing a foundation after 40:

  • Match Your Shade: Test the foundation on your jawline in natural light to find the perfect shade match.

  • Consider the Finish: Do you prefer a dewy, natural look, or a more matte finish? There are foundations available in a variety of finishes to suit your preference.

  • Don't Forget Hydration: Mature skin often needs extra hydration. Look for foundations that are hydrating or use a moisturizer underneath your foundation.

  • Less is More: Start with a light layer of foundation and build up coverage where needed. A heavy foundation can settle into wrinkles and fine lines.

Remember, beautiful skin comes in all types and textures. The goal of foundation is to enhance your natural beauty, not cover it up.

What are your favorite foundation tips and tricks?

P.S. I am an affiliate marketer and may earn commission from purchases made through certain links in this post. However, all recommendations are based on my personal experience and what I find works best for me. #ad #commissionsearned

Thinning Eyebrows

Hey fabulous friends!

We've been rocking natural eye looks and celebrating our gorgeous eyes, but what about the frame around those beautiful peepers? Our eyebrows! Eyebrows play a huge role in shaping and defining our face, and unfortunately, they can become thinner and sparser as we age. But fear not, there are ways to fill in those gaps and create brows that flatter your features and make you feel confident.

Why Do Brows Thin With Age?

There are a few reasons why our brows might thin with age. Hair growth naturally slows down as we get older, and hormonal changes can also affect eyebrow fullness. Thank you peri-menopause! GAH

Additionally, over-enthusiastic plucking in our younger years can leave us with sparse areas that never quite grow back.

The Power of a Great Brow Product

The good news is that there are a variety of products available to help us achieve our perfect brows. Today, I want to talk about a product I love: the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer (or any other brow crayon you prefer).

Why a Brow Crayon?

Brow crayons are a fantastic option for filling in sparse brows because they offer precise control. The fine tip allows you to mimic individual brow hairs for a natural look. Plus, brow crayons come in a variety of shades to match your hair color perfectly. I use the soft brown myself… https://amzn.to/3TKMGQU

Filling and Shaping with a Brow Crayon:

  1. Start with clean brows: Brush your brow hairs into place with a spoolie brush. The Anastasia Brow Definer comes with one on the other end ;)

  2. Map your brow shape: Lightly sketch out the shape of your ideal brow using short, feathery strokes. Follow the natural arch of your brow, and don't go too far outside your natural lines.

  3. Fill in the gaps: Using short, upward strokes that mimic the direction of your hair growth, gently fill in any sparse areas. Focus on creating hair-like strokes, not a solid line.

  4. Blend, blend, blend: Use the spoolie brush again to soften any harsh lines and blend the product through your brows for a natural look.

  5. Set it and forget it: (Optional) For extra hold, apply a setting spray when your whole face is complete. I use the Urban Decay Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray: Oil-Free, Natural Finish - Non-Drying Formula for All Skin Type https://amzn.to/49mf4id

Tips for Fabulous Forties Brows:

  • Don't over-pluck: Embrace your natural brow shape and avoid over-plucking.

  • Go lighter! It's better to use a shade that's slightly lighter than your hair color than to go too dark, which can look harsh.

  • Less is more: Start with a light touch and build up the color gradually. You can always add more, but it's harder to take away!

With a little practice, you can use a brow crayon to create beautiful, natural-looking brows that frame your face and make you feel confident and fabulous.

Do you have any holy grail brow products?

Natural Eye

Natural Eyes are Gorgeous…Be YOU

Welcome back to Trae’s Tips for living fabulous after 40!

In our last post, we talked about redefining beauty on our own terms and embracing what makes us unique. Today, we're diving into the world of eye makeup, specifically creating a natural look that enhances your eyes and flatters mature skin.

Why Natural Eyeshadow?

Natural colors are universally flattering and perfect for everyday wear. They add definition to your eyes without looking too dramatic or overwhelming. Plus, they tend to be more forgiving of wrinkles and creases than bold colors.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Eyeshadow Primer: This will help your eyeshadow stay put all day and prevent creasing.

  • Neutral Eyeshadow Palette: Choose a palette with shades that complement your skin tone. Look for colors like taupe, beige, brown, and shimmery champagne.

  • Eyeliner (optional): A thin line of eyeliner can add subtle definition to your lash line. Opt for a brown or charcoal pencil instead of harsh black.

    • I prefer lining the water line (right underneath the eyelashes) and when I am going out and want to pump it up a little more, then I do both the waterline and the lash line.

    • Of course I am going to push my Color Street line! Its a waterproof gel eyeliner! Our clean, creamy formula is infused with caffeine and vitamin E for an effortless, smudge-proof application that lasts up to 15 hours. I prefer Mahogany or Olive for my blue eyes.

  • Mascara: A good mascara can really make your eyes pop. Look for a formula that lengthens and defines your lashes without clumping. On my most basic days, sometimes this is all that I use!

The Application Process:

  1. Prep your lids: Apply a thin layer of eyeshadow primer to your eyelids.

  2. Base shade: Apply a light neutral shade (like beige or taupe) all over your eyelid as a base.

  3. Crease definition: Use a slightly deeper shade (like a light brown) to define your crease. Focus on applying the color in the socket of your eye and blending it upwards and outwards.

  4. Highlight: Apply a shimmery shade (like champagne) to your brow bone to add a touch of brightness and make your eyes appear more lifted.

  5. Eyeliner (optional): If you're using eyeliner, apply a thin line along your upper lash line, as close to the lashes as possible. Smudge it gently with a brush for a softer look.

    1. Personally, I prefer the EcoTools line for eyeshadow and eye liner brushes https://amzn.to/3TJX6jH

  6. Mascara: Apply a few coats of mascara to your upper and lower lashes. Remember to keep the curved bend on the Color Street wand upward, lift, wiggle and then swoop!

Tips for Mature Eyes:

  • Blend, blend, blend: The key to natural eye makeup is to blend your eyeshadow seamlessly. This will help soften any harsh lines and create a more youthful look.

  • Lighten up: Avoid dark, heavy eyeshadow colors that can accentuate crepey eyelids.

  • Shimmer strategically: A touch of shimmer on your brow bone can brighten your eyes, but avoid using too much shimmer all over your lid, as it can settle into creases.

  • Line your upper lash line: A thin line of eyeliner can help define your eyes without looking too harsh.

  • Focus on your lashes: Curling your lashes and applying a lengthening mascara will open up your eyes and make them appear more youthful.

Remember, this is just a guide! Feel free to experiment with different colors and techniques to find what looks and feels best for you. The most important thing is to have fun and enhance your natural beauty!
