Striking a Balance: Highlighting and Contouring for a Fabulous Forties Face

Hey, gorgeous gals!

Highlighter and contour – these makeup techniques can add dimension, shape, and a youthful glow to any face. But for our gorgeous, mature complexions, there are a few key things to keep in mind to achieve a natural, flattering look.

Let's Sculpt, Not Sharpen!

Gone are the days of harsh contour lines and overly dramatic highlighting. Our goal is to enhance our natural features, not drastically alter them. Here are some tips for highlighting and contouring a mature face:

  • Creamy is Dreamy: Opt for cream-based or liquid highlighters and contour products. These blend more easily than powders and won't settle into fine lines.

  • Less is More: A light touch is key! Apply each product sparingly and build up gradually for a natural effect. It is easier to add more than it is to remove. ;)

  • Placement is Paramount:

    • Highlight: Focus highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones, brow bone, and cupid's bow to add light and lift. You can also dab a touch in the inner corners of your eyes to brighten them. With my hooded eyes, I feel like it helps quite a bit.

    • Contour: Apply contour under your cheekbones, along the jawline (if desired), and down the sides of your nose to create a subtle definition.

  • Blend, Blend, Blend: Use a damp beauty blender or brush to blend your highlighter and contour seamlessly for a diffused, natural finish.

    • For the “damp” effect, I use my Clinique Moisture spray on my brush. You don’t need it to be wet!

Products for the Perfect Forty Face:

  • Cream Highlighter: A soft, radiant cream highlighter will add a beautiful glow to your mature skin.

  • Cream Contour: A blendable cream contour allows for precise application and natural-looking definition.

Highlighting and Contouring Techniques:

Here's a quick breakdown of how to apply highlighter and contour:

  1. Start with a clean, moisturized face.

  2. Apply your foundation and concealer as usual.

  3. Apply your contour shade under your cheekbones, along your jawline (if desired), and down the sides of your nose. Blend well.

  4. Apply your blush right above the contour shade on your cheekbones. Blend back toward your ear and upwards.

  5. Apply your highlighter to the tops of your cheekbones, brow bone, cupid's bow, and inner corners of your eyes. Blend well.

  6. Set your makeup with a translucent powder to keep everything in place.

Remember, you are a work of art! Highlighting and contouring are tools to enhance your natural beauty, not cover it up. Experiment with different techniques and find what flatters you most.
